Broadband Providers in the UK
The UK has one of the most competitive broadband markets, with dozens of providers competing for customers. But behind all those different brands, the market is built on a much smaller number of fibre networks.
Openreach is the biggest, with providers such as BT, EE, Sky and Plusnet using its network to reach customers. CityFibre also operates a large wholesale full fibre network, which is used by several broadband providers including Vodafone.
Then there are the altnets (alternative networks). Companies such as Hyperoptic and Community Fibre have built their own full fibre infrastructure in the areas they serve and also sell broadband directly to customers. Virgin Media operates another major network of its own.
Why do so many broadband deals look similar?
When several providers use the same underlying network, they’re often buying wholesale access at similar rates and selling broadband with similar speed tiers. That makes the UK market extremely competitive, particularly on the larger Openreach and CityFibre networks.
This is why providers regularly use lower introductory prices, reward cards, bill credits, free setup and other promotions to make their deals stand out. Two packages might use the same fibre network and offer similar speeds, but the total cost and rewards can make one considerably better value.
Which providers you can choose from still comes down to the networks available at your address. Once you know what’s available, you can compare the providers, prices and offers competing for your business.
